Located just 2 km from Tiruvaiyaru, Tirukkandiyur is a spiritually significant Divya Desam with deep connections to both Vaishnavite and Shaivite traditions. It is also considered one of the Sapta Sthana temples of Panchanadiswarar at Tiruvaiyaru.

Sacred Legends:
The most prominent legend associated with this temple parallels the one at Tirukkarambanur. When Lord Shiva plucked the fifth head of Brahma, it stuck to His palm as a form of Brahmahatthi dosham. It is believed that only after receiving alms from Lord Vishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi, the skull detached from Shiva’s palm—symbolizing liberation from sins through divine grace.
Hence, the presiding deity here is called Hara Saapa Vimochana Perumal, the Lord who relieved Shiva’s curse.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
This temple finds mention in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham through the hymns of:
- Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasuram 2050
Nearby Sacred Connection:
Directly opposite this temple is the Tirukkandiyur Veeratta Sivasthalam, a prominent Shaivite temple featuring shrines dedicated to Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati, further emphasizing the interwoven nature of divine traditions in this holy town.
Festivals:
The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated with devotion and grandeur during the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April).
