Sacred Legends:
According to legend, Uparisravas, a fishermen king who performed the aswamedha sacrifice, begot a daughter named Padmini. He later offered her in marriage to Lord Vishnu at this very shrine. It is believed that Neelamegha Perumal vanquished a demon called Veekatakshan using His mighty disc, which is why the deity is seen wielding the prayoga chakram. Another cherished tale recounts how the Lord miraculously manifested a growth of hair in the sanctum to protect the words of a devout priest, Rangabhattar, thereby attaining the name Sowrirajan.
