📜 Sthala Puranam (Temple Legend)
The central legend of this sacred kshetram revolves around Nandi, the devoted vehicle of Lord Shiva. After unintentionally offending the Dwarapalakas (gatekeepers) of Vaikuntam, Nandi undertook intense penance at this holy site. Moved by his sincere repentance, Lord Vishnu appeared before Nandi and granted him absolution. This act of divine grace is immortalized in Tirumangai Azhwar’s pasurams, where he lovingly describes the temple as “Nandi panisaida naga”—the land where Nandi offered his devoted service.
Another fascinating episode is linked to Sibi Chakravarthi, the legendary king renowned for his commitment to dharma. When the king selflessly offered his own flesh to save a pigeon, the moolavar idol turned from east to west to bless him—symbolizing the Lord’s recognition of sacrifice, valor, and righteousness.
