Tiruvazhundur – Aamaruviappan Temple
Divya Desam 23 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu
Situated near Mayiladuthurai on the Kumbakonam road, Tiruvazhundur—also known as the Aamaruviappan Temple—is a revered Divya Desam with deep connections to Krishna’s divine play. It is one of the five sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna and exudes charm, devotion, and heritage.
Divine Highlights:
- Presiding Deity: Devadirajan, also called Aamaruviappan, in a standing posture
- Thayar: Senkamalavalli
- Theertham: Darshana Pushkarini
- Vimanam: Garuda Vimanam
Sacred Legends:
This temple holds a unique place in Vaishnava lore. According to the Brahma Mohana Leela, Brahma once made the cattle Krishna was tending disappear. In response, Krishna recreated the entire herd along with the cowherd boys. Awestruck and humbled, Brahma apologized and requested Krishna to remain at Tiruvazhundur.
Several celestial beings—Kaveri, Garuda, Agastya, Dharma, and the King Uparisravas—are believed to have worshipped Lord Vishnu at this kshetram. Inside the sanctum, devotees can see Prahlada to the Lord’s right and Garuda to His left. Uniquely, River Kaveri is depicted in human form offering prayers to the Lord.
Tiruvazhundur is also celebrated as the birthplace of the great Tamil poet Kamban, the author of the Kamba Ramayanam. Statues of Kamban and his consort are enshrined within the temple premises, and the Kamban Vizha is held annually in his honor.
An interesting legend explains the temple’s name: a king named Oordavaradan once had his chariot get stuck here, leading to the name “Terazhundur” (Ter – chariot, azhundur – stuck).
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
This Divya Desam has been glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Tirumangai Azhwar in multiple verses:
- Pasurams: 1588–1627, 1854, 2066–2077, 2673 (72), 2674 (123)
Architectural Marvel:
With its towering Garuda Vimanam and ancient sculptures, the temple embodies Chola-era artistry. The sanctum features unique deities and rare iconography, blending myth and devotion. The temple is tranquil, yet spiritually vibrant, offering an immersive experience for pilgrims.
Annual Celebrations:
- Vaikasi Brahmotsavam – The major annual festival
- Kamban Festival (Panguni) – A cultural celebration honoring the Tamil epic poet
