Tiruchirupuliyur – Salasayana Perumal Temple

Tiruchirupuliyur – Salasayana Perumal Temple
Divya Desam 24 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu
Situated on the route from Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvarur, Tiruchirupuliyur is a lesser-known yet spiritually potent Divya Desam. This serene temple is home to the smallest reclining form of Lord Vishnu, and is rich in legends and blessings, especially for those afflicted with Sarpa Dosham.
Divine Highlights:
- Presiding Deity: Salasayana Perumal in Bhujanga Sayanam (reclining posture)
- Thayar: Thirumamagal Nachiyaar
- Utsavars: Kripasamudra Perumal and Dayanayaki
- Theertham: Manasa Pushkarini (also known as Anantha Saras)
- Vimanam: Nandhavarthana Vimanam
Sacred Legends:
One of the most touching legends here involves Tirumangai Azhwar, who was disheartened by the small size of the Moolavar idol. The Lord comforted him, saying that His grandeur could be experienced fully at Tirukkannamangai, assuring the Azhwar of His divine presence beyond physical dimensions.
This temple is deeply linked with the story of Adishesha and Garuda. During a celestial battle, Adishesha sought refuge at the feet of Lord Vishnu near the temple tank. The compassionate Lord made Adishesha His seat, symbolizing divine acceptance and peace. Hence, worship at this shrine is said to relieve devotees of Sarpa Dosham (afflictions caused by serpent curses).
The name Sirupuliyur is derived from the legend of Vyagrapadar, a sage blessed by Lord Shiva with the limbs and vision of a tiger (puli). He worshipped Lord Vishnu at this very site, and his idol can be seen at the feet of the reclining Lord.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
Tirumangai Azhwar has sung the glories of this sacred temple in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham:
- Pasurams: 1628–1637
Architectural Marvel:
Though modest in scale, Tiruchirupuliyur exudes an aura of calm and divinity. The Moolavar is the smallest of all reclining Vishnu idols, lying gracefully on Adishesha. The temple tank, Manasa Pushkarini, is serene and sacred, central to many of the legends here.
Annual Celebrations:
- Vaikasi Brahmotsavam – The primary annual festival
- Manavala Mamuni Utsavam – Celebrated in the month of Aippasi
- Ananthaazhwar Utsavam – Held on Sukla Paksha Ekadasi during Maasi
