Divya Desam 26 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu
Located in the historic town of Mayiladuthurai, Tiru Indalur is one of the revered Pancharanga Kshetrams and is known as Andhiya Arangam—symbolizing the Lord’s repose at dusk, complementing Srirangam (Aadhi Arangam) and Kumbakonam (Madhya Arangam). This Divya Desam draws devotees with its serene setting, richly woven legends, and the divine fragrance of Vishnu’s grace.

- Unique Feature: River Cauvery and River Ganga depicted near the Lord’s head and feet in the sanctum, reflecting His universal acceptance of both rivers as sacred
✨ Divine Highlights
- Fragrant Forest: Known as Sugandharanyam, the temple is believed to emit a divine fragrance representing the restored essence of the Vedas.
- Progeny Blessings: Special worship to Santhana Gopalan here is believed to bless childless couples with offspring.
- Cauvery’s Divine Status: At this temple, River Cauvery is honoured like River Ganga, shown above Vishnu’s head—similar to how Ganga adorns Lord Shiva’s jata (locks).
- Pancharanga Link: This kshetram is the sacred Andhiya Arangam, marking the twilight presence of Lord Ranganatha in the divine journey from sunrise to sunset.
📜 Sacred Legends
- Madhu-Kaitabha and Matsya Avataram: When demons Madhu and Kaitabha stole the sacred Vedas and hid them under the sea, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Matsya (fish) to retrieve them. After restoring the Vedas, He restored their parimala (fragrance), hence the name Parimala Ranganathar.
- Chandra’s Redemption: The Moon God (Chandra) was afflicted by a curse and regained his health and radiance after bathing in the Indu Pushkarini and worshipping the Lord here.
- Cauvery-Ganga Symbolism: The sanctum’s depiction of Ganga at the feet and Cauvery above the head of the Lord symbolizes their shared sanctity and the temple’s spiritual inclusiveness.
