✨ Divine Highlights
- Feeding the Devotee’s Child: The Lord’s consort, Purushottama Nayaki, is venerated here for having directly fed milk to the crying infant sage Upamanyu, son of Vyagrapada Maharishi, highlighting the temple’s reputation as a seat of divine maternal grace.
- Part of the 11 Sacred Shrines: This kshetram is an integral part of the Tirunangur Ekadasa Divya Desams, all praised by Tirumangai Azhwar and associated with Lord Shiva’s Rudra Yagna.
- Spiritual Nourishment: The name Purushottama itself refers to the Supreme Being beyond both the perishable (kshara) and imperishable (akshara), signifying the Lord’s ultimate nature as both immanent and transcendent.
📜 Sacred Legends
According to the Sthala Purana, Upamanyu, as a weeping infant, was hungry and inconsolable. In divine compassion, Purushottama Nayaki herself appeared and nursed him. This miraculous act of divine motherhood underlines the intimate bond between deity and devotee in this sacred space.
This temple, like its Tirunangur counterparts, is linked to Lord Shiva’s penance following Brahmahati dosha. Pleased with Shiva’s devotion, Lord Vishnu manifested in eleven unique forms — one in each of the eleven Tirunangur temples.
🎶 Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
- Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasurams: 1258 to 1267
(As per the Naalayira Divya Prabandham)
The Azhwar’s verses extol the Lord’s supreme nature as the protector and nourisher of all beings, and his boundless grace upon even the smallest devotee.
🌕 Festival Highlight: Tirumangai Azhwar Garuda Sevai
In the Tamil month of Thai, the Mangalaasaasanam Utsavam draws massive crowds, as the Utsava moorthis of all 11 Tirunangur temples are mounted on Garuda Vahanams and brought to a central location to honor Tirumangai Azhwar. Each of his pasurams dedicated to these temples are reverently recited in this grand spiritual celebration.
