Tirunilaattingal Tundam
Divya Desam 49 of 108 | Region: Tondai Nadu
Located within the vast precincts of the Sri Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram, Tirunilaattingal Tundam is a unique Divya Desam where Lord Vishnu is closely associated with Lord Shiva’s divine play. Though small in size, this shrine carries immense spiritual significance rooted in devotion, divine testing, and celestial intervention.
Divine Highlights
- Moolavar (Presiding Deity): Nilaattingal Tundattan (Chandra Chooda Perumal), in standing posture
- Thayar (Consort): Nilaattingal Tundattaayar
- Theertham: Chandra Pushkarini
- Vimanam: Purushasookta Vimanam
The presiding deity is revered as Chandra Chooda Perumal, meaning the Lord adorned with the moon, symbolizing cooling grace and cosmic balance.
Sacred Legends
As per the Sthala Purana, when Goddess Parvati was performing intense penance beneath a mango tree, Lord Shiva tested her resolve by setting the tree ablaze. In desperation, Parvati sought help from her brother, Lord Vishnu, who cooled the fire with nectarous moonlight and protected her. Vishnu later took residence here as Vamana, at Parvati’s request.
The name “Nilaa-tingal Tundam” (Nilaa = moon, Tingal = cool, Tundam = radiance/soothing presence) is derived from the belief that Soma (Moon), upon Vishnu’s request, reduced the scorching heat during the Samudra Manthanam (churning of the milky ocean).
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
- Tirumangai Azhwar: 2059
(Pasuram number as found in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham)
Though a single pasuram mentions this kshetram, it reflects the Azhwar’s deep insight into the mystical interplay between Vishnu, Shiva, and the divine forces of nature.
