Sacred Legends
According to the Varaha Purana, this holy place derives its name from an act of divine power — Lord Vishnu is said to have annihilated an entire army of Danavas (demons) in just one nimisha (moment) by deploying His Sudarshana Chakra. Hence the name Naimisharanya — “the forest of the blink-of-an-eye miracle.”
As per sthala purana, Lord Vishnu is the Aranya Swarupi (embodiment of the forest) here. The forest of Naimisaranya is believed to have been home to 60,000 sages performing yagnas and meditating for world peace.
It is also believed that Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana, took a purificatory bath in the Hatyaharana Theertham at this kshetram to absolve the sin of Brahmahatya (killing Ravana, a Brahmin by birth). The Lalitha Devi Temple, which also exists in this holy region, draws huge congregations of pilgrims, especially on new moon days.
