Sacred Legends & Spiritual Importance
According to the sthala purana, a devout woman named Shankara Mangalathammai observed the Ekadasi fast and on the following Dwadasi day fed a Brahmachari (celibate student). However, a demon named Tolakarana tried to obstruct her sacred vratham (fast). Answering her fervent prayers, the Lord took the form of a Brahmachari, defeated the demon, and partook of the feast.
Pleased with her devotion, Lord Vishnu revealed His divine form adorned with Goddess Lakshmi on His chest, earning the name Tiruvazhmarban—the Lord who protects and sustains the devotees. The name Tiruvalla itself is derived from Vallabha, one of the Lord’s epithets.
