Varkala Janardhanaswamy Temple – The Eternal Shrine of Lord Vishnu
History
The Janardhanaswamy Temple at Varkala, Trivandrum, is one of the oldest Vishnu temples in Kerala, with a history spanning over 2000 years. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Janardhana form, the temple is revered as “Dakshina Kashi” (Varanasi of the South). Built in the traditional Kerala temple architecture with a majestic gopuram, the temple has stood as a sacred pilgrimage spot for devotees seeking blessings, peace, and liberation.

Myth
Legend has it that the temple was consecrated by Lord Parashurama, the creator of Kerala, as part of his mission to establish 108 sacred shrines across the land. The temple is particularly associated with Pitru Tarpanam (ancestral rituals) performed on the banks of the Varkala cliff near the temple. It is believed that offering prayers here helps liberate the souls of ancestors, granting moksha.
