Introduction
Erumeli Ayyappa Temple, located in Kottayam district of Kerala, is one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. This temple is significant as the starting point of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, where devotees begin their spiritual journey with special rituals and traditions. The temple is closely associated with the famous Petta Thullal ritual, symbolizing the victory of Dharma over Adharma.
History and Mythology
Erumeli derives its name from Eruma kolli, meaning the place where Lord Ayyappa killed the demoness Mahishi. According to legend, after slaying Mahishi, Ayyappa danced joyfully with the tribes of the forest – this later evolved into the Petta Thullal festival celebrated annually.
The temple has two shrines – the Dharmasastha Temple (Erumeli Sastha Temple) and the Vavar Mosque, highlighting the message of religious harmony. Devotees worship at both shrines before proceeding to Sabarimala.
