Dharmasthala – The Sacred Abode of Dharma

A Unique Temple Where Faith, Charity and Harmony Unite
By SouthGuru Holidays – Incredible South India

In the serene valleys of the Western Ghats of Karnataka lies the spiritually powerful town of Dharmasthala — a rare pilgrimage center where Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Jain traditions, and philanthropy beautifully coexist.

At the heart of this sacred town stands the renowned Manjunatha Temple Dharmasthala, dedicated to Lord Manjunatha (Shiva). More than a temple, Dharmasthala is a living symbol of righteousness, charity, and religious harmony.

The Divine Legend of Dharmasthala

The Story of Dharma Daivas

According to temple tradition, centuries ago a Jain chieftain named Birmanna Pergade lived in this region. One night, the four guardian spirits known as Dharma Daivas appeared in his dream.

They instructed him to dedicate his life to charity and dharma (righteousness). Obeying their command, he converted his home into a place of hospitality and service for pilgrims.

Later, Lord Manjunatha (a form of Shiva) manifested here as a Shivalinga. To perform the rituals, Brahmin priests were invited from Udupi, and worship began in accordance with Shaivite tradition — while the temple administration remained with the Jain family.

This unique arrangement continues even today.

A Rare Harmony of Faiths

Dharmasthala stands as one of India’s most remarkable examples of religious unity:

  • The deity is Lord Shiva (Manjunatha).
  • The temple is administered by the Jain Heggade family.
  • Vaishnavite priests perform daily rituals.
  • Jain Tirthankara idols are also worshipped within the complex.

This harmonious coexistence makes Dharmasthala truly special.

The present hereditary trustee, D. Veerendra Heggade, has expanded the temple’s charitable and social initiatives to national prominence.

The Mythical Significance of Lord Manjunatha

The name “Manjunatha” means “Lord of the Snow,” referring to Shiva’s association with Mount Kailasa.

Devotees believe that Lord Manjunatha at Dharmasthala grants:

  • Justice in difficult matters
  • Removal of sins and karmic burdens
  • Family harmony
  • Prosperity through righteous living

It is said that sincere prayers offered here are answered through the path of dharma rather than shortcuts.

Annaprasada – The Living Practice of Dharma

One of the most powerful aspects of Dharmasthala is its free mass feeding (Annadana).

Every day, thousands of devotees are served meals regardless of caste, religion, or status. This tradition symbolizes the very essence of the town’s name — “Dharmasthala,” meaning “Place of Righteousness.”

Bahubali Statue and Sacred Surroundings

Near the temple stands the majestic Bahubali Statue Dharmasthala, a towering monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, symbolizing renunciation and spiritual victory.

Pilgrims often combine darshan at:

  • Udupi Krishna Temple
  • Kollur Mookambika Temple
  • Subrahmanya Temple (Kukke)

creating a powerful Western Ghats pilgrimage circuit.

Festivals and Spiritual Vibrations

The Laksha Deepotsava festival illuminates the temple with thousands of lamps, creating an unforgettable divine atmosphere.

Daily rituals, Vedic chants, and the steady flow of devotees create a deeply spiritual ambiance throughout the year.
