Located about 3 km from Papanasam, near Kumbakonam, the sacred Divya Desam of Kapistalam is famed for its deep association with Gajendra Moksham. This temple is also referred to as Aatrangarai Kannan Kshetram, positioned beautifully on the banks of a river.

Sacred Legends:
The temple is rooted in the divine episode of Gajendra Moksham, where Gajendra, the elephant king, was caught by a crocodile while collecting lotus flowers for worship. In utter devotion, he cried out to Lord Vishnu, who immediately descended to save him, showcasing His compassion for all beings who seek Him.
The name Kapistalam comes from the Vanara brothers, Vaali and Sugriva, who are believed to have worshipped here. The temple also holds special reverence for Lord Hanuman (Anjaneyar), linking it spiritually to both the Ramayana and Bhagavatam traditions.
