Kulathupuzha Ayyappa Temple – Complete Pilgrimage Guide with Timings & Festivals
Introduction
Kulathupuzha Ayyappa Temple, located on the banks of the Kulathupuzha River in Kollam district, Kerala, is one of the Pancha Sastha temples dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. What makes this temple unique is that the presiding deity here is worshipped in the child form (Bala Sastha), unlike other Ayyappa temples where He is seen as a youth or ascetic. The serene surroundings, thick forests, and sacred riverbanks make this a significant pilgrimage site in Kerala.

History & Legend
According to legends, Lord Ayyappa appeared here in the form of a child (Bala Sastha). The temple is believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parasurama, who established the Sastha temples across Kerala. The Kulathupuzha River is considered sacred, and pilgrims take a holy dip before darshan.
Another myth connects the temple with the Pancha Sastha circuit – Aryankavu, Achankovil, Kulathupuzha, Erumeli, and Sabarimala – highlighting different stages of Lord Ayyappa’s divine presence.
Architecture & Temple Features
The temple follows traditional Kerala temple architecture, with a beautiful sanctum (sreekovil), namaskara mandapam, and intricate wooden carvings. The presence of the river enhances the sanctity, and the temple atmosphere is deeply spiritual.
Festivals & Special Days
Vishu Mahotsavam – The most important festival celebrated in April, marked by grand processions, cultural performances, and special poojas.
Mandala-Makaravilakku season – Attracts thousands of devotees on their pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
Vishu Kani Darshanam at Kulathupuzha is considered highly auspicious.
