History
The Parasurama Temple in Thiruvallam, Trivandrum, is believed to be the only temple in Kerala dedicated exclusively to Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. As per legends, Parasurama is the creator of Kerala, reclaiming the land from the sea by throwing his axe. This temple, dating back over 2000 years, stands as a testimony to Kerala’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture, it attracts devotees seeking blessings for prosperity and peace.
Myth
According to mythology, Lord Parasurama performed penance at this temple after relinquishing his warrior’s duties. The temple is also associated with the ritual of Bali Tharpanam, where devotees perform offerings for their ancestors, especially during Karkidaka Vavu (Amavasya). Thousands gather here on this day to honor their forefathers, making it one of the most spiritually significant shrines in Kerala.
Location
Parasurama Temple is located at Thiruvallam, about 6 km from Trivandrum city and lies en route to the famous Kovalam Beach. Its riverside location, where the Karamana River flows, adds to the serene spiritual ambience.
