Salagramam – The Sacred Mukthi Kshetram in the Himalayas

Salagramam – The Sacred Mukthi Kshetram in the Himalayas
Divya Desam 70 of 108 | Region: Vada Nadu (Northern India – Nepal)
Salagramam, also known as Tiruchalagramam, is one of the most mystical and remote Divya Desams. Located deep in the Himalayan ranges of Nepal, this site is venerated by Sri Vaishnavas for its spiritual potency and association with Salagrama shilas, the sacred stones representing Lord Vishnu himself.
Divine Highlights
- Moolavar: Sri Murthi
- Thayar: Sri Devi
- Theertham: Chakra Theertham
- Vimanam: Kanaka Vimanam
Salagramam is located approximately 200 km from Kathmandu and requires a 5-hour trek from Beni. It is popularly known as Mukthinath, revered as a Mukthi Kshetram – a place that grants liberation (moksha) to sincere devotees.
The Mystery of Salagramam
There is no unanimous view on the exact location of this Divya Desam. Some traditions hold Mukthinath as the Divya Desam, while others venerate the banks of the Gandaki River (en route to Mukthinath) as the sacred site. The Gandaki River is the only source of Salagrama shilas, which are naturally formed fossilized ammonites that are held sacred and worshipped in Sri Vaishnava homes and temples.
The spiritual significance of these stones is so profound that Periyazhwar praises Krishna as “Salagramam Udaiya Nambi” – the One who is inseparable from the sacred Salagramam.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
- Periyaazhwar – 206, 399
- Tirumangai Azhwar – 988–997
(Pasuram numbers as found in Naalayira Divya Prabandham)
These verses reflect the awe and reverence with which the Azhwars glorified Lord Vishnu residing in this remote Himalayan abode.
