Sacred Legends:
Tirukkannankudi is sanctified by the penance of revered sages such as Brighu Maharshi, Gautama Rishi, and even Lord Brahma. A unique legend tells us that Sage Vashishta, in a gesture of utmost devotion, fashioned an idol of Lord Krishna from butter and meditated upon it. The Lord manifested before him, radiating divine grace. Nearby sages were drawn towards this form as if bound by spiritual threads—“Paasa Kayiru”—leading to the temple’s name: Tirukkannankudi.
Behind the sanctum stands the Kaayaamagizh tree, believed to be the same one beneath which Lord Krishna appeared. Remarkably, its flowers are said to never fade—a symbol of eternal devotion.
In a historic tale, Tirumangai Azhwar is believed to have retrieved a golden Buddha statue from a vihara in Nagapattinam and concealed it in this temple. The resources were later utilized for the construction of the Srirangam temple.
