Tirukkarambanur – Uttamar Koyil

Tirukkarambanur – Uttamar Koyil
Divya Desam 3 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu
Located just 2 km from Srirangam and 7 km from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tirukkarambanur, also known as Uttamar Koyil or Bhikshatanar Koyil, is a rare and unique Divya Desam. This sacred temple is accessible both by road and rail, with the nearby Uttamar Koil (Pichandar Koil) Railway Station serving pilgrims and visitors alike.
Unique Feature:
This is one of the very few temples in India where all three divine trinities—Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma—along with their consorts are enshrined within the same temple complex.
- Vishnu with Lakshmi (as Poornavalli Thayar)
- Shiva with Parvathi (as Vadivudai Amman)
- Brahma with Saraswati
This harmonious co-existence of Trimurtis makes this temple spiritually significant and architecturally unique.
Divine Highlights:
- Presiding Deity: Lord Purushottaman in standing posture
- Thayar: Poornavalli Thayar (also known as Poorva Devi)
- Theertham: Karamba Theertham
- Vimanam: Udyoga Vimanam
Sacred Legends:
One of the most captivating legends here is that Lord Shiva, after severing Brahma’s fifth head, was cursed with it sticking to his palm. He was relieved from this curse only after receiving alms from Goddess Mahalakshmi, symbolizing the greatness of compassion and divine grace.
Another legend narrates that Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a Kadamba tree, and Brahma, filled with devotion, worshipped Him by offering water from his Kamandalam. Kadamba Muni is also said to have worshipped the Lord here by the sacred Karamba Theertham, a tank created by Brahma himself.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
This Divya Desam has been glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham:
- Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasuram 1399
It is believed that Tirumangai Azhwar lived in this region and personally oversaw renovations at the nearby Srirangam Ranganathar temple, underlining this kshetram’s close connection with Srirangam.
Festivals:
- Brahmotsavam for Purushottaman Perumal is celebrated in Chittirai (April).
- Brahmotsavam for Lord Shiva is celebrated during Vaikasi (May).
- During the Maasi festival, the Utsava Murthy of Lord Ranganatha from Srirangam is brought to the Karamba Theertham, adding further grandeur to the celebrations.
Historical Significance:
The temple bears epigraphical records from the Chola and Pandya eras, making it not only a spiritual but also a historical landmark.
