Tirukkavalampadi – The Parijatha bloom of Tirunangur (Chozhanadu)

Divya Desam 27 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu

Located around 10 km from Sirkazhi, Tirukkavalampadi is one of the Eleven Tirunangur Divya Desams closely associated with Tirumangai Azhwar. This serene village temple, also known as Keezhchattanathapuram or Kannan Koyil, houses Lord Gopalakrishnan—portrayed in a rare form with Rukmini and Satyabhama, holding a cow by a rope in His hand. This sacred site is considered spiritually equivalent to Dwaraka, the divine city of Krishna.

🛕 Temple Details

  • Moolavar: Gopalakrishnan (with Rukmini and Satyabhama) – Standing posture, holding a cow with a rope in the left hand
  • Thayar: Senkamala Naachiyar (also called Madavaral Mangai) – No separate sanctum
  • Utsavar: Rajagopalan
  • Theertham: Tadamalarppoikai
  • Vimanam: Swayambu Vimanam

✨ Divine Highlights

  • Krishna’s Leela Murti: The Lord is worshipped here in an enchanting form with His queens and a cow, capturing the divine play (leela) of Krishna as the Gopala.
  • Dwarka in the East: The presence of both Rukmini and Satyabhama makes this kshetram symbolically mirror Dwaraka, the western stronghold of Krishna’s divine pastimes.
  • Tirumangai Azhwar’s Divine Canvas: This is one of the 11 sacred Tirunangur temples sung by Tirumangai Azhwar, making it spiritually potent for Vaishnavites.
  • Rare Festival: Ekadasa Garuda Sevai, celebrated after the new moon in Thai month, is a grand festival when all eleven Tirunangur temples bring their utsava murthis on Garuda Vahanam to Tirunangur for a unified darshan before Tirumangai Azhwar seated on Hamsa Vahanam.

📜 Sacred Legends

  • The Parijatha Quest: According to temple lore, Lord Krishna once set out to find Parijatha flowers to please Satyabhama. After searching far and wide, He meditated on Lord Shiva, who guided Him to a lake filled with Parijatha flowers—Tirukkavalampadi.
  • Dwarka Parallel: Because of the Lord’s appearance here with both His consorts, and the connection to Parijatha, this shrine is held on par with the grandeur of Dwaraka in spiritual essence.

🎶 Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam

  • Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasurams: 1298 to 1307
    (as per Naalayira Divya Prabandham)
The Azhwar beautifully glorifies this shrine, immersing the reader in Krishna’s divine charm and the mystique of Tirunangur.
