Sacred Legends
According to the sthala purana, Kubera, the lord of wealth, once lost all the Nine Nidhis (the nine types of wealth) due to a curse by Goddess Parvathi. In deep distress, Kubera prayed fervently to Lord Vaithamanidhi here at Tirukkolur. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord restored Kubera’s lost wealth and granted blessings.
The deity is also called Nikshepavitthan or Vaitha Manidhi, signifying the divine custodian of all wealth and prosperity.
Furthermore, it is believed that Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) prayed at this temple to seek victory over adharma (unrighteousness), and hence the Lord earned the name Adharma Pishunam (the destroyer of unrighteousness).
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
The temple is glorified extensively in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Nammaazhwar, with pasurams spanning 3293-3390 and 3473. These hymns celebrate the divine grace and miracles of Lord Vaithamanidhi.
