Situated about 11 kilometers from Srivaikuntam, the sacred temple of Tirukkulandai, also known as Perunkulam, is one of the revered Nava Tirupathi shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Divine Highlights
- Moolavar: Srinivasar (also called Mayakoothan) in a standing posture
- Thayar: Kulandaivalli Nachiyar
- Theertham: Perungulam
- Vimanam: Anandanilaya Vimanam
The Lord here is affectionately called Mayakoothan, signifying His playful and mysterious nature, reflected in the legend of the divine dance.
Sacred Legends
Legend narrates that Kamalavathi, the daughter of Vedasaran, performed intense penance to win the Lord’s hand in marriage. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Srinivasar embraced and married her here, earning this place the name Balika Vanam (meaning the forest of the young maiden).
Additionally, the Lord is said to have performed a cosmic dance (Mayayuddham) after slaying the demon Asmacharan at this site. This divine victory is the reason the Lord is known here as Mayakoothan — the Lord who danced in a magical battle.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
The temple is celebrated in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Nammaazhwar in the pasuram numbered 3561. The saint’s hymns glorify the divine presence and miracles of Lord Srinivasar in this holy shrine.
