Tirukkurungudi – The Sacred Abode of Azhagiya Nambi

Divya Desam 89 of 108 | Region: Pandiyanadu

Nestled amidst the serene beauty of the Tirunelveli district, about 10 km from Nanguneri, lies the spiritually resplendent Divya Desam of Tirukkurungudi. Revered for its divine connections, architectural brilliance, and deep Vaishnavite heritage, this temple is home to the magnificent Lord Azhagiya Nambi, whose various forms are venerated throughout this sacred complex.

Divine Highlights

  • Moolavar: Azhagiya Nambi (Sundara Paripurnan) – Standing posture
  • Thayar: Kurungudi Nachiyar
  • Theertham: Tiruparkadal
  • Vimanam: Panjakhedaka Vimanam

Apart from the moolavar, the temple houses unique shrines to Kidantha Nambi (reclining), Irundha Nambi (sitting), and Malai Mel Nambi (hill-top shrine), representing Vishnu’s three postures—standing, sitting, and reclining.

Sacred Legends & Significance

The sthala purana describes this kshetram as one where Lord Vishnu appeared as a humble disciple, seeking spiritual initiation from Sri Ramanujacharya, thereby earning the title Vaishnava Nambi. This story signifies the Lord’s humility and His love for His devotees and acharyas.

It is also believed that Lord Vishnu, in His Varaha Avatara, shrunk His majestic form to reside in this divine hamlet—thus the name Kurungudi (kurungu = small, kudi = abode).

Furthermore, this is the sacred site where Vishnu taught the Sudarsana Mantra to Lord Shiva, showcasing divine harmony between the two deities. There is even a Shiva shrine inside this Vishnu temple, a rarity among Divya Desams, highlighting syncretic reverence.

Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam

Tirukkurungudi holds a special place in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, with deep emotional outpourings from multiple Azhwars:

  • Periyaazhwar – Pasuram 71
  • Tirumazhisai Azhwar – Pasuram 813
  • Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasurams 1005, 1399, 1470, 1788–1807, 2065, 2674 (114)
  • Nammaazhwar – Pasurams 2782, 2986, 3161–3171

Tirumangai Azhwar, after worshipping at Badrinath and Srirangam, attained Moksha at the feet of Lord Nambi here. His verses reflect overwhelming devotion and longing for the Lord’s darshan.

Vaishnava Tradition: Arayar Sevai & Divine Recognition

Tirukkurungudi was once home to 18 families of Arayars, who performed Arayar Sevai—the traditional form of reciting and enacting the Divya Prabandham in dance-like gestures. Lord Nambi Himself is believed to have witnessed their devotion in person and granted them moksha. In honor of their service, a bell hangs in the sanctum, a testimony to divine acknowledgment.

Architectural Marvel

The temple features a rich blend of Pandyan and Nayak architecture, complete with:

  • Exquisite stone carvings of deities and legends
  • Tiered wooden gopuram with detailed woodwork
  • Color-applied stone moolavar idols adorned with gold leaves, as per the Agama Sastras

The tranquil shrine of Malai Mel Nambi on the adjacent hill offers panoramic views and spiritual solitude.

Festivals

The grand Panguni Brahmotsavam is celebrated with deep fervor, drawing thousands of devotees. Rituals, processions, and cultural performances bring the temple to vibrant life.
