Sacred Legends and Spiritual Significance
This Divya Desam is represented through two shrines — one at Joshimath and the other at Nandaprayag.
The Joshimath shrine is famous for housing Lord Narasimha and Vasudeva, established by the great saint Adi Shankaracharya himself. He also founded his first matha (monastic institution) near this site and composed the profound Sri Bhashyam here. During the winter months, when Badrinath becomes inaccessible due to snow, the Utsava Murti of Badrinarayana is ceremoniously brought here and worshipped, symbolizing the uninterrupted continuation of divine service.
The Nandaprayag shrine holds the enchanting deity of Gopala (child Krishna), connecting the kshetram to both Vaikunta divinity and Gokula leelas.
According to tradition, Tirumangai Azhwar, in his pasurams, refers to the Lord at this kshetram as Rama, Krishna, and Paraman reclining on the thousand-headed serpent Adisesha, indicating the manifestation of Paramapurushan, the supreme form of Vishnu.

Adi Shankara and the Himalayan Vaishnavism
This Divya Desam also holds the distinction of being an Adi Shankara Sannidhi, where the Advaita philosopher not only established his matha but also showed reverence to Vishnu in His divine forms — an indicator of spiritual harmony that bridges Vaishnavism and Advaita philosophy.
