Tiruvananthapuram – The Abode of Anantha Padmanabhan

Divya Desam 86 of 108 | Region: Malainadu (kerala)

Nestled in the heart of Kerala’s capital city, Tiruvananthapuram, lies one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring Divya Desams—Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple. This temple, known for its grandeur and deep spiritual resonance, houses the largest reclining Vishnu idol in the world and stands as a testament to Kerala’s rich Vaishnavite legacy.

Divine Highlights

  • Presiding Deity (Moolavar): Anantha Padmanabhan – Reclining posture on Adisesha
  • Thayar: Sri Hari Lakshmi
  • Theertham: Matsya Theertham
  • Vimanam: Hemakooda Vimanam

The moolavar here is seen reclining on the thousand-hooded Anantha (Adisesha), with His right hand resting on a Shiva lingam and His consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi at His feet.

Sacred Legends & Unique Architecture

According to the Sthala Purana, the sage Divakara Muni, a devout worshipper of a Saligrama, was astonished when a divine toddler swallowed his Saligrama and vanished into a tree. As the sage searched, the tree split open to reveal Lord Vishnu in His cosmic form (Vishwaroopa). Upon the sage’s request, the Lord reduced His form to the length of a Tridanda (sacred staff), which is why the idol is so large that it is viewed through three separate doorways—head, navel, and feet.

The idol is said to be made of Nava Ratnams (nine precious gems) and covered with a natural herbal black paste known as meygu. The temple is also home to deities like Yoga Narasimha, Lakshmi Hayagriva, Krishna, and Hanuman.

Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam

  • Nammaazhwar: Pasurams 3678–3688 (Naalayira Divya Prabandham)

Nammaazhwar glorifies this kshetram where Lord Vishnu rests in eternal yoga nidra, signifying His role as the cosmic protector and the ultimate refuge for all beings.

Cultural Significance

The Travancore Royal Family has historically patronized this temple and continues to play a symbolic role in its administration. The temple is globally renowned for its spiritual heritage and architectural splendor.

Two grand annual festivals are celebrated during the Tamil months of Panguni and Aippasi, drawing thousands of devotees from across the country.
