Padmanabhapuram Palace – A Timeless Wooden Marvel of Kerala

History

The Padmanabhapuram Palace, located in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district but maintained by the Kerala State Archaeology Department, is one of the finest surviving examples of traditional Kerala architecture. Built in the 16th century by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal and expanded by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma in the 18th century, this palace served as the royal seat of the Travancore Kingdom until the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram.

Crafted almost entirely from wood, the palace is renowned for its intricate rosewood carvings, black granite flooring polished with a mix of coconut shell charcoal, egg white, and lime, and stunning murals that reflect Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.

Myth & Legacy

While not a temple, the palace holds immense cultural and spiritual significance. Dedicated to Lord Padmanabhaswamy, the family deity of Travancore royals, the palace symbolizes their devotion and allegiance to the presiding deity of Thiruvananthapuram’s Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

Architecture & Highlights

Padmanabhapuram Palace is a sprawling complex of 6 palaces, each showcasing exquisite architecture:

  • Mantrasala (Council Chamber) – where the king held royal meetings.

  • Thai Kottaram (Mother’s Palace) – the oldest structure, built in 1550 AD.

  • Natakasala (Performance Hall) – adorned with murals and granite pillars.

  • Charity Dining Hall (Oottupura) – could feed up to 1000 people at once.

  • The King’s Bedroom – featuring a medicinal bed made from 64 types of wood.
