Located about 25 kilometers from Srivaikuntam, Tirukkurugur, also famously known as Azhwar Tirunagari, is a revered Divya Desam and an important shrine among the Nava Tirupathi temples. This sacred kshetram holds deep spiritual significance and is closely associated with the life of Nammaazhwar.

Sacred Legends
The sthala purana describes that Indra, the king of devas, was absolved of a curse after fervent prayers here. A unique legend speaks of Lakshmi’s meditation on Lord Vishnu when He had taken a vow of celibacy. Responding to her devotion, the Lord accepted her in the form of a garland made of Magizha flowers (Manguva malar maalai), symbolizing their divine union.
It is also believed that Lakshmi incarnated at this kshetram as a tamarind tree, under which the child Nammaazhwar resided and meditated on Lord Vishnu. This divine connection lends the name Azhwar Tirunagari to the temple.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
This temple is richly praised by Nammaazhwar in the Naalaayira Divya Prabandham, particularly in pasurams 3106-3116. The heartfelt hymns celebrate the Lord’s benevolence and the spiritual experiences of Nammaazhwar here.
Unique Temple Traditions
- The temple is known for the Arayar Sevai, a traditional devotional dance performance where the pasurams of the Divya Desams are rendered with expressive gestures.
During the Tamil month of Vaikasi, a grand festival is celebrated wherein the Utsava moorthis of all Nava Tirupathi temples are brought here on Garuda Vahanas. They pay homage to Nammaazhwar seated on the Hamsa Vahana. Devotees recite the pasurams dedicated to each deity, creating a deeply devotional atmosphere.
