Tirunaraiyur – Nachiyar Koil (Naachiyaar Koyil)

Located on the route from Kumbakonam to Tiruvarur, Tirunaraiyur is home to the famous Nachiyar Koil, one of the few temples where Thayar (Goddess Lakshmi) holds primary importance, hence the name “Nachiyar Koil”.

Sacred Legends:
According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi was born as Vanchulavalli under a Vanchula tree to Medhavi Rishi. Lord Vishnu appeared in His Pancha Vyuha forms – Sankarshana (east), Pradyumna (south), Aniruddha (west), Purushottama (north), and Vasudeva (center) – and married her.
There is no separate shrine for Thayar, as both deities are enshrined together in the sanctum. This temple houses shrines for Yoga Narasimhar, Rama, Hanuman, and Chakrapani.
One of the unique features is the shrine of Kal Garudan, the divine mount of the Lord. As per temple tradition, only 4 people are required to lift Kal Garudan inside the sanctum, but as He is taken out, 64 people are required – signifying His magical increase in weight. Kal Garudan is believed to remove Navagraha Dosham.
During festivals, Nachiyar leads the procession on the Hamsa Vahanam, a rare sight where Goddess takes precedence.
