The name Tiruneermalai derives from the fact that during Tirumangai Azhwar’s visit, the shrine along with the hill was surrounded by water (“Neer” meaning water). This serene landscape adds to the divine atmosphere.
Sacred Legend
Valmiki Maharshi is believed to have worshipped the three prominent forms of Lord Vishnu on the hilltop shrines. At the base temple, he witnessed Lord Ranganatha and Ranganayaki appearing as Rama and Sita, accompanied by divine manifestations: Adisesha, Sanku, and Chakra appeared as Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Satrughna, while Garuda took the form of Hanuman. This divine vision ties the temple closely to the Ramayana tradition.
