Sacred Legends
According to the sthala purana, on the advice of Durvasa Muni, Bhoo Devi meditated intensely at this temple. While bathing in the holy Tamaraparani River, she discovered a pair of fish-shaped earrings, which she offered as a sacred gift to Lord Vishnu.
This incident is associated with the name Makara Nedunkuzhaikkadan, describing the Lord’s majestic form.
It is also believed that Varuna, the god of rain, worshipped Lord Vishnu here to absolve himself of a curse, adding to the sanctity of the place.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
The temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Nammaazhwar, with pasurams spanning 3359-3369. These hymns praise the Lord’s compassion and miracles at Tirupperai.
