Tirupputkuzhi is a revered Divya Desam located about 11 kilometers from Kanchipuram, along the Katpadi road. This sacred site commemorates a significant episode from the Ramayana and is cherished for its unique legends and divine grace.

Sacred Legend
The temple derives its name from the legend of Jatayu, the divine eagle who valiantly fought to save Sita from Ravana. After succumbing to his wounds, Lord Rama, separated from Sita, performed the last rites for Jatayu here by offering tarpana (water oblations) at this holy spot, hence the name Tiru Pul Kuzhi (meaning sacred bird pit).
The moolavar image depicts Vijayaraghava Perumal tenderly holding Jatayu on His lap, symbolizing compassion and valor. Interestingly, in the sanctum, the usual positions of Sri Devi and Bhoodevi are interchanged, marking this temple’s distinctiveness.
Rituals & Festivals
- Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
- Tirumangai Azhwar: Pasurams 1115, 2674 (117) from the Naalaayira Divya Prabandham.
- On New Moon days, pilgrims gather at the Jatayu Theertham to perform rites for their departed ancestors.
- The temple is known for a unique ritual where barren women receive prasadam made of roasted lentils soaked in water. It is believed that if these lentils sprout at home, the women will be blessed with children.
