Tirupullamboothangudi – Valvil Raman Temple
Divya Desam 10 of 108 | Region: Chozhanadu
Located just 5 km from Swamimalai near Kumbakonam, Tirupullamboothangudi is a sacred Divya Desam associated with Lord Rama and the Jatayu Moksham episode from the Ramayana.
Divine Highlights:
- Presiding Deity: Valvil Raman in a reclining posture (Bhujanga Sayanam)
- Thayar: Hemambujavalli Thayar (also known as Potramaraiyal)
- Theertham: Jatayu Theertham
- Vimanam: Sobana Vimanam
Sacred Legends:
This is believed to be the holy spot where Lord Rama rested after granting moksha to Jatayu. In keeping with the Ramayana episode, Sita Devi is not seen with the Moolavar, symbolizing the time of their separation. However, Bhooma Devi has a separate shrine. Interestingly, the Utsavar is seen with four arms holding the Shanku and Chakram, which is rare for depictions of Rama.
The temple is also just 2 km from Mandangudi, the birthplace of Tondaradipodi Azhwar, and is administered by Ahobila Mutt, with a Brindavanam for the 19th Jeer, Sri Maha Desikan.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam:
Praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by:
- Tirumangai Azhwar – Pasurams 1348–1357
Festivals:
- The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated during the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April).
