Sacred Legends
According to the sthala purana, a couple was cursed by Kubera to transform into a measure (tulai) and a bow (villu). During a yaga performed by the sage Athreya Suprapa Muni at this place, he found these objects in the yaga sala. Upon touching them, the couple was restored to their human forms and freed from the curse. Hence, the place is named Tulaivillimangalam.
Additionally, Ashwini Kumars, the celestial physicians, are said to have worshipped Lord Vishnu here offering red lotus flowers, further sanctifying this sacred space.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
This temple finds special mention in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham through the hymns of Nammaazhwar, specifically in pasuram numbers 3271-3281. The devotional verses emphasize the sanctity and divine grace bestowed by Lord Devapiran here.
