Tiruvanparisaram – Birthplace of Devotion, Blessings of Lakshmi
Divya Desam 88 of 108 | Region: Malainadu ( Tamilnadu – Kerala Border)
Located just 4 km from Nagercoil in southern Tamil Nadu, Tiruvanparisaram, also known as Tirupatisaram, is revered as the sacred land where Nammaazhwar’s parents received divine blessings to beget the illustrious saint. This spiritually rich Divya Desam is enveloped in peace and echoes the early foundations of Bhakti through its tranquil setting and divine presence.
Divine Highlights
- Presiding Deity (Moolavar): Tirukuralappan (also known as Tiruvazhmarban) – Standing posture
- Thayar: Kamalavalli Nachiyar
- Theertham: Lakshmi Theertham
- Vimanam: Indrakalyana Vimanam
The Lord here is worshipped in his serene form, bearing the name Tiruvazhmarban, meaning “One who bears Lakshmi (Sri) on His chest,” representing divine grace and auspiciousness.
Sacred Legends & Spiritual Significance
The Sthala Purana narrates that after Lord Narayana manifested in the fierce Narasimha form to protect Prahlada, Goddess Lakshmi, startled by the Ugra swaroopam, withdrew herself. At Prahlada’s earnest request, the Lord resumed His Saumya roopam (calm form), and Lakshmi returned to Him, taking Her place on His chest. This compassionate form earned Him the name Tiruvazhmarban (Sri-Vaari-Udaiya-Nambi in Tamil), a title often associated with Vishnu’s role as the consort of Lakshmi.
Additionally, Udayanangai and Kari, the devout parents of Nammaazhwar, are believed to have worshipped here with utmost piety, and were blessed with the birth of the saint—an embodiment of ultimate devotion and philosophical depth in the Vaishnavite tradition.
Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam
- Nammaazhwar: Pasuram 3475 (Naalayira Divya Prabandham)
In this solitary yet profound hymn, Nammaazhwar extols the compassion of Tirukuralappan and the spiritual sanctity of this Divya Desam that granted his very existence.
Architectural & Cultural Significance
The temple architecture reflects the Kerala-style blend with Tamil influences, marked by sloping tiled roofs and serene courtyards. With its calm surroundings and sacred Lakshmi Theertham, the temple offers a soul-nourishing experience for seekers.
