Such is the significance of this kshetram that it is believed a pilgrimage here is equivalent to visiting all 108 Divya Desams.
A prominent legend tells of the architect-sage Mayan, who meditated deeply upon Lord Vishnu. The Lord initially appeared with His divine symbols—conch (shankha) and discus (chakra). When Mayan expressed his desire to see Lord Rama, Vishnu handed over His conch and discus to Garuda and manifested as Rama, holding bow and arrow. Owing to this transformation and the Lord’s dazzling beauty, He came to be known as Kolavilli Raman. Devotees can also witness a rare icon of Garudazhwar holding the chakra and shankha, reinforcing this divine narrative.
