Sacred Legend
According to the sthala purana, Sage Gavala Maharshi had 360 daughters, whom he offered to the Lord. The Lord accepted them all by merging them into one maiden whom He kept on His lap. By marrying one maiden each day for 360 days, the Lord gained the epithet Nitya Kalyana Perumal—the Eternal Bridegroom. The temple thus embodies eternal divine marriage and auspiciousness.
The temple also has historical significance as sages Markandeya and Mahabali are said to have worshipped here.
