276 Paadal Petra Sthalams – Complete List of Devara Shiva Temples
276 Paadal Petra Sthalams – Complete List of Devara Shiva Temples
The 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams, also known as the Devara Paadal Petra Sthalangal, are among the most sacred Shiva temples associated with the Tamil Shaivite tradition.
These ancient Shiva temples were glorified in the Thevaram hymns composed by the three great Nayanmar saints – Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) and Sundarar.
Spread mainly across Tamil Nadu, with sacred sites also found in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, northern India and Sri Lanka, the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams form an important part of the spiritual, cultural and architectural heritage of South India.
For devotees interested in Shiva temple pilgrimage, Thevaram temples, Devara Sthalams, Paadal Petra Sthalangal and ancient Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu, this guide provides a comprehensive region-wise list.
What is a Paadal Petra Sthalam?
The Tamil expression Paadal Petra Sthalam refers to a sacred Shiva temple that has been praised in the devotional hymns of the Nayanmar saints.
The three principal saints associated with the Thevaram are:
- Thirugnana Sambandar
- Thirunavukkarasar (Appar)
- Sundaramurthi Nayanar (Sundarar)
Their devotional compositions form an important part of the Panniru Thirumurai, the twelve sacred works of Tamil Shaivism.
The temples celebrated through these hymns came to be revered as Paadal Petra Sthalams.
How Many Paadal Petra Sthalams Are There?
The traditional count is 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
The majority are located in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the historic Chola Nadu, where an extraordinary concentration of ancient Shiva temples can be found around the Cauvery River and its fertile delta.
Different books and websites sometimes show slightly different regional counts because of variations in historical classification and the treatment of later additions. Therefore, readers may encounter lists showing 274, 275 or 276.
For this article, we follow the 276-temple traditional enumeration and retain the historical regional classification used in established Shaivite temple references.

The Importance of Chola Nadu in Paadal Petra Sthalam Pilgrimage
Among all the traditional regions, Chola Nadu has the largest concentration of Paadal Petra Sthalams.
The 191 temples traditionally associated with the Cauvery region are divided into:
63 temples north of the Cauvery
and
128 temples south of the Cauvery
This concentration makes the Cauvery delta one of the most important regions for Thevaram temple pilgrimage and Tamil Shaivite heritage.
Many famous temples are found in and around Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Chidambaram and Tiruchirappalli.
Famous Paadal Petra Sthalams
Some of the most well-known temples among the 276 include:

Paadal Petra Sthalams and Thevaram
The Thevaram is one of the most important bodies of devotional literature in Tamil Shaivism.
The hymns celebrate Lord Shiva, the sacred temples, the surrounding landscapes and the spiritual experiences of the Nayanmar saints.
The three principal hymnists are traditionally known as the Moovar:
- Appar
- Sambandar
- Sundarar
Their hymns helped establish many of these temples as major centres of Shaivite worship and pilgrimage.
Paadal Petra Sthalam vs Vaippu Sthalam
A Paadal Petra Sthalam should not be confused with a Vaippu Sthalam.
Paadal Petra Sthalams are temples specifically celebrated in the recognised Thevaram hymns.
Vaippu Sthalams are sacred places that are mentioned or referred to in the hymns but do not necessarily have a dedicated complete hymn in the same manner.
This distinction is important when preparing a list of the traditional 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
Why Visit the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams?
A pilgrimage to the Paadal Petra Sthalams is not simply a visit to a collection of ancient temples.
It is a journey through the spiritual and cultural history of Tamil Nadu and South India.
These temples preserve:
- Tamil Shaivite devotional traditions
- Thevaram literature
- Nayanmar history
- Ancient Tamil culture
- Dravidian temple architecture
- Chola, Pandya and Pallava heritage
- Traditional festivals and rituals
- Centuries-old pilgrimage traditions
Many of these temples continue to function as living centres of worship, with daily pujas, festivals and traditional ceremonies.
